Voices in the Street
Growing up, I spent a lot of my time in Chinatown, MA because I had family that lived there. I was always in awe of the street art in Chinatown because of the bright colors and the space it fills. From the murals to the graffiti, it stood a beautiful reminder of the voices of everyone that lived in the city. This inspired me to create this installation.
Inside this installation are photos of murals and graffiti found throughout chinatown. To emulate the bright colors, I used UV paint to color parts of the photographs. To navigate, the murals are titled so viewers can visit and find them for themselves. Common elements like lanterns and lotus flowers are also drawn onto laser-cut ornaments to further illustrate the Chinatown setting.
The covers and dim lighting create a fort that is child-like giving a nostalgic feeling for visitors. Inside the installation, there are three sets of UV light strips to light up the UV paint. Vistors are also provided with two sets of flashlights to further push the nostalgic atmosphere.
